Caltrans Hazmat Division

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) maintains 12 districts covering 50,000 miles of California highways. Their Hazmat Division tasked Spill Bully with designing a custom spill response system that could be implemented as a uniform solution across the entire division.

THE CHALLENGE

California regularly ranks in the top 3 states for highway hazmat incidents. Caltrans needed to decrease response time, improve the efficiency and safety of their cleanup process, and reduce environmental impact by moving away from plastics and synthetic materials. They wanted a solution that could be deployed uniformly across all hazmat districts.

OUR SOLUTION

After working closely with the Chief Hazmat Manager out of Sacramento, Spill Bully designed the custom Caltrans Spill Kit 2.0. In the Spring of 2020, Spill Bully delivered custom spill kits and loose absorbent to 11 of their districts. The new system incorporates environmentally friendly absorbents, eliminating the use of plastics and synthetic materials in hazardous spill cleanup.

Because this spill response system was designed in full partnership with Caltrans and specifically addresses their needs in the field, it qualified for a sole-source designation — meaning Spill Bully is the only approved vendor for this system statewide.
