CalTrans | Hazmat Division
The D.O.T. in California, better known as Caltrans, has 12 districts covering 50,000 miles of California highways. The Caltrans Hazmat Division tasked Spill Bully with designing a custom spill response system for them. In the Spring of 2020, Spill Bully delivered custom spill kits and loose absorbent to 11 of their sites. Feedback from district managers proved helpful in determining what components were most needed to respond to a highway spill.
This spill response system was designed in full partnership with Caltrans and specifically addresses their needs in the field, therefore, qualifying for a “sole source” designation.

Project Task
Knowing that California regularly lands in the top 3 in the US for highway hazmat incidents, Caltrans was looking for ways to decrease their response time to contain a spill and they turned to Spill Bully.
Caltrans wanted to improve upon their entire clean up process, increasing efficiency and safety, while also being more conscious of environmental impact. Their goal was to use less plastics and synthetic materials to clean up hazardous spills.
Caltrans asked Spill Bully to develop a highly effficient spill response system that could be implemented as a uniform solution across the entire hazmat division. Additionally, they asked Spill Bully to source and locate a new containment solution to place under fuel tanks.
Our Solution
After working closely with the Chief Hazmat Manager out of Sacramento, Spill Bully designed the custom Caltrans Spill Kit 2.0. This new, custom version comes with a 10-gallon Spill Bully Spill Kit, a 2’x2’ collapsible berm, and an assortment of specialty tools.
By incorporating Spill Bully, they’re now equipped with environmentally friendly absorbents for hazardous spill clean up, thus achieving their goal of reducing the amount of plastics and synthetic materials.
